HOLOCAUST TEACHER’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE DEFIANT REQUIEM PROGRAM
October 14 @ 12:30 pm - 1:00 pmFREE
Congregation Beth Israel would like to bring Heidi Omlor, a Holocaust Studies teacher at Ellsworth High School, to speak after the Kiddush on October 14, 2017. She will provide information to publicize the Defiant Requiem program on October 29 sponsored by the JCEA and the three Bangor synagogues. Ms. Omler participated in the Rafael Schacter fellowship program at Terezin in the Czech Republic in May of 2017, which was sponsored by the Defiant Requiem Foundation. Rafael Schacter was the conductor at Terezin who organized a choir of 150 prisoners and taught them to perform Verdi’s Requiem, as an act of defiance against the Nazis. Maestro Murry Sidlin, the director of the Defiant Requiem Foundation, brought Schacter’s story to life in the reconstructed documentary film about the Defiant Requiem. The Defiant Requiem Foundation honors the memory of the prisoners in Terezin who found hope in music in the face of death.
