Visiting a synagogue can feel intimidating if you’ve never been before, or if it’s been a while. We want you to feel comfortable, welcomed, and at home. Here’s what you can expect at Beth Israel.

What to expect when you visit

A warm welcome

You’ll be greeted by friendly faces who are happy you’re here.

Meaningful prayer

Our services are a blend of tradition and participation. You can follow along in English. We have transliterated siddurim (prayer books) on-hand.

Participation is optional

Do what feels right for you. There’s know pressure to know all the words or the customs.

Come as you are

Wear what you’re comfortable in. There’s no dress code.

Children are welcome

We love having children in our services and programs.
Free childcare is available most Saturday mornings.

Stay and connect

Join us for Kiddush after Saturday morning services. It’s a great way to meet people and shmooze.

Frequently asked questions

There is no dress code at Congregation Beth Israel. We do recommend “business casual,” but we’re mostly just glad you’re here.

If you have a tallit (prayer shawl) and your own yarmulke, you can certainly bring those, otherwise we have them on hand.

While the majority of our services are in Hebrew, we use a siddur (prayer book) that has an English translation, and we call out page numbers. We also offer transliterated prayer books that allow you to sing along.

Absolutely! We welcome non-Jewish guests and family members.

Children are welcome in services, but on Saturday mornings, we also usually have on-site childcare. If you want to enroll your kids in our religious school, Kesher, give us a call!

Right out front! Our block of York Street is home to two synagogues and no other buildings. You may part right on the street.
