Young Families

Families with young children enjoy many vibrant, casual programs at Congregation Beth Israel.

Our programs focus on building connections to Judaism while building relationships with other Jewish children.  All while having fun!

Tot Shabbat

These services, held at least one Saturday morning a month, offer families with young children an opportunity to celebrate Shabbat together.  Songs, lessons related to the week’s Torah portion, and games!

PJ Library

Congregation Beth Israel participates in the PJ Library program, which gives free monthly subscriptions of age-appropriate Jewish books, music, and more to Maine kids age 6 months to 8 years!

Chevruta (Religious School)

Religious School at Congregation Beth Israel starts in pre-K and continues well beyond b’nai mitzvah.  Chevruta, right now, is held online via Zoom on Tuesday evenings.  Morah Leah offers fun lessons about the Jewish holidays, the Hebrew alphabet, Torah, Israel, and so much more.  Classes feature Jewish crafts, music, cooking (making hamantaschen or latkes, no debates), story-telling, and other age-appropriate activities.  Occasionally, we hold community-wide Family Learning events that are great for the whole family.

We are also working towards post-COVID “Mitzvah Days” for our Chevruta.
