High Holy Days

High Holy Days at Congregation Beth Israel

Beth Israel has an “open door” policy, welcoming everyone for the High Holy Days.  However, because of safety-related capacity restrictions, we highly encourage you to contact us in advance of the holidays.

For those who do not want to attend in-person, or prefer participating remotely, we will video stream our entire set of sanctuary services.  The streaming is a non-interactive service running on Facebook and YouTube.

Streaming

Streaming links can be found on the side of this page.  Our services are streamed on Facebook and YouTube.  These are automated systems that run on a schedule.  They are not interactive, and comments on the streams are generally not monitored on Shabbat or Yom Tov.

If you are not able to attend in-person, you may contact the office for a copy of the Machzor we use for services.  We also provide links for digital editions on this page.

Security

We anticipate no major issues during the High Holy Days this year.  Bangor, Maine is a very safe community, and we have a strong relationship with the Bangor Police Department, who always up their patrols during significant chagim.  We also work with the city to close off York Street in front of Beth Israel and Beth Abraham.  That said, we will have on-site security and leaders of the congregation versed in our security procedures.  We maintain a singular point of entrance, and that is the Epstein Room Lobby at the ground floor entrance off of York Street.  While we do not ask you to present tickets, we will check your name against an attendance list.

About Cantor Justin Pellis

1_edited_edited.jpg

Justin Pellis is a multi-instrumentalist and cantorial student in New York City.  He was brought up on the harmony and soul of his home synagogue, Bet-Am Shalom.

He received a scholarship to Goucher in 2017 with the intention of heading straight to its theater program.  As an active member of Goucher Hillel, he represented Goucher College at the AJC conference of 2018 in Jerusalem and at the AIPAC conference in 2018.

Justin is training to be a cantor at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.  He spends his summers at Ramah Wisconsin as a song leader and accompanist.

Justin led High Holy Day services at the Jacksonville Jewish Center in Florida.

Justin’s sister, Rachel, is a student at UMO and is very active in their Hillel.  We are so excited to welcome Justin to Congregation Beth Israel!
